No shutdown has been announced, and the signals in 2026 point the other way. Inflection relaunched Pi in July with a new lab and a new experiment built on it, and the iPhone app has shipped steadily since. Treat rumors of its death as rumors.

What happened in 2024, and why so much of the internet still thinks Pi is dead

Because the 2024 story was dramatic, and most coverage stopped there.

In March 2024, Inflection's founders left for Microsoft, which hired most of the staff and paid about $650 million to license the technology. Inflection kept operating and turned toward enterprise AI. Pi's consumer surface narrowed the same year: the WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger channels were discontinued.

Then came a long quiet stretch, which is when almost every "what happened to Pi" article was written. Many of those articles still rank. They describe a company that has since started shipping again.

What changed in 2026

Three things you can check yourself, all verified on 2026-10-28.

The July 21 relaunch. Inflection's announcement launched Inflection AI Labs and said Pi "has an updated product experience with improvements to voice, conversation, and memory," "plus new tools for reminders, to-do lists, and shopping."

Pi Journeys. The same post names it "the first Inflection AI Labs experiment," designed "to meet people where they are in life." It does not say whether it is open to everyone.

The release cadence. On the App Store, Pi 26.720.0 (July 28) added Hands-free and Tap to talk voice modes and a new icon, and a string of releases through September and October followed, the latest in the week of October 24. Inflection's blog also kept publishing through October, including posts on speech models and safety data.

What is worth checking before you invest a year in any companion

A relaunch is good news, not a guarantee, and the question under "what happened to Pi" is usually bigger than Pi: how much of yourself should you put somewhere you do not control?

Know where the history lives, and how it leaves. Your history with Pi lives with Pi. Look at what the current settings let you take with you, and do it now rather than on announcement day.

Know that endings are not yours to schedule. Dot announced its shutdown on September 5, 2025 and stayed up only until October 5 so people could download their data. What made Pi special

Pi got tone right. It was, and in conversation still is, one of the warmest, least performative voices shipped. It did not lecture, did not perform intelligence at you, and did not try to be your girlfriend. A lot of people talked to Pi because it was personal without being romantic, and that combination is rarer than it should be. Sort the alternatives by those two properties.

If your first requirement is privacy: Kin describes itself as running "on zero-access architecture with on-device memory and a biometric lock," and its 2.0 release added sync across your devices. It is a paid product, with yearly plans listed up to $339.99.

If you want companionship with a long memory: Nomi offers customizable characters with short- and long-term memory, at $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year for its Standard plan. Its center of gravity is companionship and roleplay; for some Pi people that is the point, for others it is the wrong direction.
