What happened in 2024, and why so much of the internet still thinks Pi is dead

Because the 2024 story was genuinely dramatic, and most coverage stopped there.

In March 2024, Inflection's founders left for Microsoft, which acqui-hired nearly the entire roughly 70-person workforce and paid $650 million to license the technology. The company kept operating and redirected toward enterprise AI, with Sean White as CEO. Pi's consumer surface narrowed that same year: the WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger channels were discontinued, and Pi has lived only in its own app and on the web since.

Then came a long quiet stretch. From the 2024 departures until early 2026 there was little visible consumer development, which is exactly the window in which almost every "what happened to Pi" article was written. Those articles are still ranking. They are describing a company that has since started shipping again.

What changed in July 2026

Three things you can check yourself.

Inflection AI Labs and Pi Journeys. The 2026-07-21 post announced both: a research and product lab, and Pi Journeys, a consumer product built around structured memory for the people who matter to you.

Pi itself got an update. Inflection's own description: "an updated product experience with improvements to voice, conversation, and memory, plus new tools for reminders, to-do lists, and shopping." Note what is on that list. Memory and voice are the two places a warm companion lives or dies, which is our reading, not Inflection's claim.

The release cadence is visible. Seven iOS releases since March 2026, the latest on 2026-07-28, adding voice modes and a new app icon. Version history is public; read it before you trust anyone's summary of it, including ours.

What is still worth checking before you invest a year in any companion

A relaunch is good news, not a guarantee, and the question underneath "what happened to Pi" is usually not really about Pi. It is: how much of yourself should you put somewhere you do not control?

That question survives the good news, for every product in the category. A companion is not a calculator. You are investing a running history of yourself into it, the value compounds over time, and so does the exposure. Two things worth doing calmly while nothing is wrong:

Know where the history lives, and how it leaves. Pi's history of you lives with Pi. Check the current settings and help documentation for what export looks like, and do it now rather than on announcement day.

Two things to know: it is no longer a free-tier-only product, with paid plans listed up to $339.99, and its tradeoff is the audit surface, since you cannot yet open the whole of what it believes about you with sources attached.

If you want companionship with a memory you help write: Nomi is $99.99 a year on iOS, $15.99 monthly. You author its Shared Notes yourself, and you write and edit its Backstory, which is more hand-on-the-wheel than most of the category offers. What Nomi builds on its own side is not documented as something you can view. Its center of gravity is companionship and roleplay; for some Pi people that is the point, for others it is exactly the wrong direction.
